Book Review: Emerge (Evolve) by S.E. Hall

The New Adult Romance genre is continuing to explode and expand, bringing with it great new books and new authors. Emerge, the first book in the Evolve series by S.E. Hall is one of those books. I'm not sure what I expected when I started reading this, but I certainly wasn't expecting it to captivate me so quickly. I literally started reading it and did not stop until I finished, with the the occasional eye lift to flip some chicken and stir some pasta. It was that good.

Laney and Evan have been best friends since they were 10 years old. They are inseparable and have done everything together. As there senior year comes to an end, they discover that their feeling run much deeper than friendship. Unfortunately, fate has them going to colleges hours apart from each other, so Laney decides they should break it off so neither has an expectations. Will distance make to heart grow fonder or will it break apart their newly budding love? When she meets Dane, there is instant attraction and chemistry between them. She will have to decided if she wants to explore those feelings with Dane or stick to what she has always known.

I'm always a little hesitant when it comes to reading stories of love triangles. I don't like cheating or people getting hurt. This as close to a spoiler as I will ever post on here, but I feel it necessary to point out there is no cheating in this story. I know how that can deter some people from reading a novel so I wanted to put that out there. Unfortunately, though, in a love triangle, someone always gets hurt.

Evan is the sweet, handsome boy next door that you can't help but love. From the moment of their first kiss, you can feel how deep his love is for her.

"Are you intimidated, Evan?" "Not anymore, I'm done with that, and I'm done not kissing you. All you have to do is say no, precious girl. But please, please...just say yes."

And then there is Dane. Sexy as hell Dane. Who makes it clear to Laney how much he wants her and cares about her. I want to know where boys like him were when I was 19! He is thoughtful and sweet but in a way that just makes you want to swoon at his feet.

"Last chance, Disney. Once I get a taste, I'm coming after you with everything I've got."

This is a story of a young woman emerging from her shell. Back home, Laney didn't date until Evan and she barely had any friends. At college, her new group of friends help her to spread her wings a little and have some fun. For the most part, I liked Laney a lot. She's got a good head on her shoulders and I loved her sarcastic wit. She does have a little bit of the wishy washy "who should I choose" nonsense going on, but she is barely 19 so that is to be expected. When a surprise betrayal threatens to ruin one of the best things she has, will everything crumble or will Laney be able to pick up the pieces?

I will say that the ending is a little heartbreaking. I'm looking forward to book 2 to see how the boy she didn't choose is able to move on. Book 2, Embrace, is due out in October 2013 and will be his story. We are gifted with a preview of Chapter One of Embrace at the end of Emerge and it is a promise of another great book in this series.
