Book Review: Lifeless (Lifeless #1) by J.M. La Rocca

One of the things I love about reading, besides escaping into a great story, is discovering new authors. I recently had the chance to read the debut novel from J.M. La Rocca, Lifeless. Now, I love a sexy, alpha male in a book I'm reading, but give me a sexy, tattooed, bad boy, alpha male and I'm a goner. Lifeless is the story of Scarlett and Kade. Scarlett hasn't had the easiest life: her father left when she was 7, her mother is an alcoholic drug addict and she just found out her boyfriend is actually married. To someone else. Looking to start fresh, she moves to Atlanta. This is when bad boy rock star Kade erupts into her world and the chemistry between them is instantly hot.

"Do you feel the heat?"
I could feel his hot breath on my ear and it was sending lightning bolts down my body.
"Yes." I said, biting my lower lip.
He grabbed my hips and pulled me closer, nuzzling his face to my ear. "I feel that heat every time I look at you, Scarlett, since the first time I saw you." My breathing picked up speed. "You make me feel things that scare the fuck out of me, but I like the way they make me feel. Can you feel it too, Scarlett?" I could only nod.

Oh. My. Swoon! Hell yeah, I can feel the heat too! Their lust at first sight is wonderful to read. But Kade hasn't had the best life either and he has secrets. Secrets that he isn't willing to share with Scarlett. While ultimately he may be trying to protect her from his past, those secrets could end up destroying what they have. Especially when his past confronts them.

I really liked Kade a lot, and not just because he was delicious. He dove right into their relationship with no hesitation and was pretty obvious in his feelings. And as much as I loved Kade, I liked Scarlett just as much.  Yeah she has been through more than her share of garbage to deal with, but after all that she is still strong and not afraid to call Kade out on some issues.

This book ends with a bunch of unexpected twists and one heck of a cliff hanger. I know a lot of us avid readers grumble about cliff hangers. However, a good one won't leave you frustrated, but anxious to get your hands on the next book. That is what La Rocca accomplishes here. This was a great debut for her and I can't wait to read more of her books in the future.

Book two in the Lifeless series, My Beautiful, is scheduled to release sometime in December 2013 and looks like it will be both from Scarlett's and Kade's point of view (whereas Lifeless was just from Scarlett's POV).

Nothing in life had ever prepared me for the feelings I had for her. She was my beautiful, my reason, and my light.

I have absolutely no idea how I am supposed to wait five months for more Kade. Sigh.
