Book Review: Defying the Odds (Battered Hearts #1) by Kele Moon

Melody Dylan has finally gotten away from her abusive husband and she is starting over in the small town of Garnet. Having left him with only the clothes on her back, she is starting from scratch and struggling to make ends meet. Her own problems don't keep her from doing something nice for a stranger. When she sees the handsome man sitting all alone in her station on Thanksgiving and looking a bit forlorn, she can't help but reach out to him.

Garnet is known for breeding world class UFC fighters and Clay Powers is the biggest and best of them all. While he loves fighting, and has multiple championship belts to prove it, he hates the media circus that comes along with it. His gruffness and surly demeanor keep most people at arms length. But that doesn't put Melody off which both surprises and entrances him.

Clay soon starts spending every meal at Hal's Diner and the two spend some time getting to know each other and connecting even more. While the sexual attraction is undeniable, there is also something much deeper there. Clay has really never had a relationship before but he knows he wants it all with Melody. After all Melody has been through, can she learn to trust a man again - especially one that  makes a living fighting? And when her past threatens to catch up with her, will she give up something great to go on the run again?

First of all - a series about MMA fighters? Yes please! You all know how much I love those MMA men so this was something I had to start reading. I loved Clay because really, what's not to love? Yeah he's huge and hot, there is so much more to him than what people think. Underneath his abrasive personality is a true tender heart which only Melody can bring out in him. It makes you want to curl up and cuddle into those massive, bulging arms of his. I found it incredibly sweet that he fell for the cute, little waitress. And Melody, who has been through hell and back, is such a strong woman. She has to dig a little bit to find that strength, but it's in there.

This books is choc full of sexiness, emotions and a bit of drama and I enjoyed it all. It instantly got me hooked on this series and I dove into book 2: Star Crossed. I felt that Defying The Odds just lacked a bit of polish that would have brought it up to 4 stars for me.

"I want this too, okay? I want it more than anything. I’d give up every championship belt I own to be with you, but I don’t wanna fuck you in a car. I wanna make love to you in a bed.”

Book Blurb:
When struggling waitress Melody Dylan gives a handsome, lonely stranger a simple gift she has no clue her life is about to take a drastic turn.

The stranger ends up being Clay Powers, a famous UFC heavyweight fighter. Clay’s large build and dangerous fists have always intimidated. People in his hometown keep their distance and Clay is fine with that. Everything changes when a new waitress at the local diner buys him a piece of pie on thanksgiving. Touched by the gesture when it’s obvious she can barely afford to survive, her warm smile and lush body churn up powerful feelings that leave Clay wanting more from her than pie.

Melody is running from her past and the small, country town of Garnet is the perfect hiding place. With an ex-husband after her and scars from her abusive marriage etched deep, the last thing she expects is to fall for a man who makes a living with his fists, but she can’t resist Clay or the tender connection they share.

Finding love in the most unlikely of places, the passion is undeniable, but Clay and Melody know their haunted pasts and unpredictable futures leave the odds stacked against them.
