Book Review: Moore To Lose (Needing Moore #2) by Julie A. Richman

Well, I'm trying to figure out what best describes how I feel after reading Moore to Lose. I think "holy crap" might sum it up. When I'm going to be reading and reviewing a book, I usually refrain from reading other reviews until after I've read it myself. I want to start with a blank slate. So when I started reading this, I expected it to pick up right where Searching For Moore left off. And it does. But after a brief visit to the present, we are plunged  back in time to when Mia fled back to New York. What followed was so far from what I had anticipated for this book.

Mia is starting her sophomore year and is absolutely miserable over what she believes happened with Schooner. We follow her journey through the years between then and now and witness her attempts at relationships, her self destructive behavior and finally properly dealing with her PTSD. To say it is an emotional roller coaster is putting it mildly. Even though I knew that they would eventually reconnect, my heart ached for broken Mia. You want Mia to be able to move on and find love. Her relationships range from dangerous one-night hookups, to a long term disaster and then to something really sweet and loving.

And dammit I was pissed all over again at CJ for screwing everything up, plus at others who you find out helped keep them apart.

At about the 63% point something hit me. I suddenly realized where a part of the plot was going and it broke me even before it happened. I started crying just knowing what would eventually happen and I had to walk away from the book for a few hours. When I finally came back and powered through to it, my heart shattered. I didn't just cry, I big ugly sob cried. It has been a while since a book did that to me.

After we get through Mia's very emotional journey, we come back a little bit closer to the present and get a quick glimpse at Schooner during the time he contacted Mia and then him leaving CJ. (Yup, still frickin hate her). When we make it back to the present, Schooner has some issues going on that impact his relationship with Mia. Things are very strained and we are left wondering if they can survive this. Quite honestly, I am pretty pissed off at Schooner.

I 100% loved this book. The emotional ride left me raw and gutted at the end but it needed to happen in order for us to fully understand everything Mia has been though. No one deserves a happily ever after more than her and now we just have to wait for the final book, Moore Than Forever, to see if she gets it. And I'm also hoping that CJ gets her ass kicked. Hey, a girl can dream, can't she?

Excerpt
Damn, this woman could bring him to his knees. There they were - both standing there, naked. Vulnerable. The truth was finally out. And if he was standing there high on the edge of a cliff, he wasn't standing there alone anymore. Mia had joined him. She was as bold and fearless as she'd always been. This was the Mia Silver with whom he had fallen hopelessly in love.

"We're going to be ok, Mia," he reassured her. He wasn't going to allow himself to believe anything else. He could picture her shaking her head yes on the other end of the phone as he heard her trying to hide her tears. He pictured gently wiping them away with his thumb.

"You promise, Schooner?"

And as always with Mia, making a promise was so damn easy. "I promise, Baby Girl."

  1. Loved this 2nd book just as much as the first!...In this we read of Mia's life during the 24 years apart from Schooner....This book helps answer some of the questions hanging from the first... We meet some new characters and some old ones and discover how they fitted into the first book... The book wouldn't of course be complete without the re appearance of Schooner Moore! It's left me wanting...Moore!!

  2. Sign me up for the "CJ has to go" fan club!!

I had the same reaction to "Moore to Lose." My expectations were very high, but the book delivered an unexpected punch to the gut (actually three of them). I was gratified to see that Julie Richman focused on Mia's journey over the 24 "lost" years. It was emotional, raw, funny, sad, poignant and wonderful to see a woman lose and find herself, in the process.

I am looking forward to the final chapter in the "Needing Moore" trilogy, as Mia and Schooner finally reach their HEA! Highly recommended!

Julie A. Richman has such a way with her words and attention to the finer details, she had me feeling as if I was living inside this story. (oh how I wish that was really the case)
Can’t wait to see how this EPIC story ends!!
