Book Review: Off Chance (Off Series #5) by Sawyer Bennett

Flynn Caldwell suffered a great loss at the hands of fire, and it has shaped the rest of his life. He is now a New York City Fire Fighter and OK, he might have a bit of a hero complex. He repeatedly throws himself into harm's way without a second thought to his own well being. Then an apartment complex fire has him rescuing a girl and a dog that have the power to win his heart. Rowan Paige walked away from her parents and life in Texas five years ago and she hasn't looked back. She might not have much, but everything she has she's earned on her own. She refuses to need anyone else and she certainly doesn't trust anyone.

When Flynn realizes that Rowan has nowhere to go after the fire, his hero complex kicks into full gear and he offers for her and her dog Capone to be his roommates. Not one to accept handouts, Rowan agrees so long as she can take care of the apartment until she can find a job and pay her share. They easily slip into a friendship and become increasingly close to one another. However, there is a deeper connection there and and serious sexual attraction. Flynn knows he wants more but Rowan refuses to ruin the only true friend she has by adding sex into them mix. How long can she resist the sexy firefighter? And when will she accept what her own true feelings are?
First of all, this book has one hell of an opening which  left me a bit shell shocked. Scratch that, I think gutted is a better description. It is the kind of prologue that smacks you in the face and then rips your heart out. I was immediately devastated for Flynn and I wanted to heal and protect him.  He is impossible not to love. He's got the whole hot firefighter thing going on but he is also open and honest and has no problem showing Rowan how he really feels.

“I want someone to be my everything. I've wanted it so bad since Marney died that I can taste it on my lips...and it tastes like ambrosia. I know Rowan will taste like ambrosia.”

I have very mixed feeling about Rowan. I get that she is afraid to love, but that fear repeatedly hurts Flynn. I know it isn't intentional and she has her own issues to work through, but part of me hates her for it nonetheless. Eventually, I got over it and I do like her in the end, I just wish she got her shit together sooner.

And on a totally random side note, I have to mention that Flynn's favorite sports figure is Martin Brodeur, goalie for the NHL's New Jersey Devils. As a crazy Devils fan myself, this just makes Flynn even more awesome to me.  Like seriously perfect. OK, back on track now...

Along Flynn's and Rowan's journey we meet up with all of the couples from the first four books in the Off Series. I loved that this special event was included in the book and that we get to briefly catch up with everyone. The end was bittersweet for me because while I was happy for all of the characters, I was sad to see the series come to an end. But after finishing it I learned that since we all love this series so much, Ms. Bennett has decided to continue on with it! Squeeeeeeee! No news yet on what the next book will be or when it will be released, but just knowing it will come some day is enough to make me happy. I can't wait for the next installment.

Thank you Sawyer Bennett for creating amazing characters who I could never get enough of and for being one very cool chick.

“You don't know how much I've dreamed of this, Rowan. Of doing this to you." I plunge and caress a little harder and I can feel her body start to stiffen. "I want to do so many things to you...really, really dirty things. Will you do anything I ask?"
Rowan gasps as I push two fingers in and then pull them both out to spread her moisture around. "Yes," she gasps. "Anything."
"Will you come for me? Right now?" I push against her as I say those words and holy fuck, she fractures apart in front of me.”

He is seeking absolution.
Flynn Caldwell has a hero complex and it’s one of the reasons he joined the New York City Fire Department. He has spent his entire professional career trying to atone for that one person he failed to save. Because, if he can do that, then perhaps he can be worthy of love again.

She is seeking escape.
Rowan Page’s life is nothing short of a disaster. Always immersed in trouble, she has only herself to depend on. She’s determined to pull herself out of this mess and make something of her life, despite the hard years she has lived on the streets of New York.

Together, they have the chance to become complete.
Flynn and Rowan’s worlds exist miles apart, but when a chance meeting brings them together, neither of them can deny the instant pull that connects them to each other. What starts as a tiny spark eventually flares into a fire so hot, it refuses to be extinguished.

Both are willing to jump feet first into the flames to see where it takes them, despite the risk of being burned.
