Book Review: Only For You (For You #1) by Genna Rulon

Everleigh has just one semester of college left and she can't wait to finish and start with her coffee business. Unfortunately, a series of viscous attacks on the female students has everyone on edge. The attacks are getting worse and the police don't seem to have any leads. When Ev's best friend Sam signs them up for a school sponsored self defense class, she is reluctant but goes because she knows it is the smart thing to do. Then she lays eyes on the instructor.

Hunter is pure perfect of chiseled, sexy man. Ev's first encounter with him is a disaster, getting her thrown out of the self defense class. But when they see each other in classes later, their witty banter has Ev wanting him as a friend. As their friendship blossoms, Everleigh realizes how much she is starting to care for him, but Hunter insists they stay just friends. Why is he holding back from her? And as the attacks become more frequent and more violent, will the monster be caught before someone close to them gets hurt?

I have a difficult time believing this is author Genna Rulon's debut novel because it was just that good. She did a fantastic job of blending a serious and scary subject along with every day life and humor. Because the reality is that even when tragedy is going on around us we do  have to continue on with our lives.
I really loved the heroine Everleigh. She is hilarious and had me cracking up throughout the book and she only let's a select few into her inner circle; which is so very much like myself.

When speaking of coffee, amongst other things, bigger is always better.

I could wash my clothes on his stomach if there were ever a nuclear event that killed the world's power sources and we were forced to revert to pioneer living. Thank you sir, may I have another?

After four years of college, I had learned the benefit of being proactive versus procrastinating. Damn maturity and personal growth. It was far easier being irresponsible and stunted.

The camaraderie she finds in Hunter is sincere and sweet and they are great as best friends. But you can feel the sexual chemistry and tension that is lying just beneath the surface and the anticipation for them to finally experience each other is both exciting and frustrating. At first you have to wait for Ev to open her eyes and realize she couldn't be more wrong about Hunter's desires. Then when she finally realizes that, he firmly keeps her in the friend zone indefinitely, stating it isn't a good time for him. I was so irritated and kept wondering what the hell is problem was when it was so obvious he wanted her too. Hunter is so protective of Ev, which I found enduring. But something just didn't add up with his story and his hesitance with her. It took me until nearly to the twist at the end to really put it all together. Rulon did a wonderful job of keeping the attacker a mystery for the majority of the story. I had several people in mind before the truth finally came out and I thought it could have been any one of them. Genna Rulon did an awesome job with this and blending so many emotions together into a story with real characters that a reader can connect too.

The quiet "dark horse" of this story is Griffin. He's got this whole laid beck, sexy bartender who sings and plays the guitar thing going on. Griffin is silently pining for Sam while dishing out relationship advice to his friends. I can't wait for more of him and more from Genna Rulon! Book 2, Pieces For You, will be Sam's and Griffin's story and is due out December 2013.

Book Blurb:
“In its purest form love is self-sacrificing, eternal, selfless, enduring, truthful, forgiving and indulgent. It also feels an awful lot like a kick to the stomach when you try to fight it!”

All Everleigh Carsen wanted to do was complete her final semester at Hensley University and begin the life she carefully planned.

When a wave of violent crime seizes campus, Everleigh is persuaded to attend a school sponsored self-defense seminar by her best friend, where she meets volunteer instructor, Hunter Charles. After Everleigh’s biting sarcasm induces Hunter to eject her from class, a tempestuous relationship is born.

Everleigh is determined to forget the striking man, but fate—that fickle shrew—continuously intervenes. Unable to escape him, she declares Hunter an enemy combatant. The only complication…Hunter is resolutely pursuing vindication…by any means necessary. Verbal warfare ensues, and despite Everleigh’s ingenious efforts, in Hunter, she has finally found her equal.

Only For You is a compelling tale of friendship, desire, and redemption—brimming with intelligent characters, witty dialogue, unexpected twists, profound sorrow, unfettered hope, and love’s unassailable perseverance.
